Vegreville Res Report (and California addition)

Vegreville Res Report (and California addition)

Postby Brandon on Thu Nov 05, 2009 1:14 am

I was up in Alberta for a few days and couldn't resist heading out to the pond. It looked like cold weather and scattered snow flurries was the forecast. Supposedly it rained all day Friday in Edmonton, but at the res it was light breezes and no precipitation. The fish were biting like mad from the second we cast out our rigs. So many bites but few hooks ups in comparison. Caught 6 in all and kept the four deeper hook ones for dinner. It was a great day out with the little brother and grandpa! On Sunday My little bro and I tried Hermitage park pond in Edmonton and had one bit and then one follow on a spinner. We tried the NSR for nothing but a couple of lost lures. I guess it wasn't our day.

Story if interested:
I took a week off and planned some to take some time out on the coast. I was a little disappointed when the weather report was calling for 8-10 foot swells and 20 knot winds all weekend and into the next week. We drove up to Monterey and enjoyed Saturday lazing around a sweet hotel before heading down the coast. The weather Saturday was great with some heavy fog in areas and bright blue sky in others, made for some neat pics. We stayed at Treebones resort and after some waffles and orange juice headed down to the water. The swell was up, the sun was out but the wind was pretty much not existent. There were huge swells out there, but my wife and I got out no problem. But then it happened for the second time ever I started to feel sea sick. My wife had her little scopolamine patch on so she was fine. I don't know what it is, maybe being in the kayak makes it worse for me. Anyways the first day wasn't going to well, lost a bunch of bites and a couple fish earlier then I puked my guts out... all those good waffles. Then about ten minutes after that I caught a Ling cod around 18-20 inches (my first). Chucked him back to grow some more. As it got later we didn't have anymore bites so we headed in around 4:30pm. We just about made it and about ten feet from the beach we had a minor crash. That was ok, everything was stowed. The fish cops checked us when we got to the parking lot.
Day two on Monday another great day. Got out there a little earlier and now I had a patch on too. No bites or nothing tried all sorts of stuff and finally switched to something they wanted to eat around 2:30pm and caught three in a row. So my sleeping wife was awake by then and I set her up with a rig too. We both caught a black and yellows, a few gophers and blacks. Then my wife caught a nice fat cabezon which we tossed back. Soon after that I hooked up and started to crank the fish in but he took two runs. Then I saw a nice ling cod coming up. He was a little over 25 inches. So I was pretty happy since I have never caught a ling before this trip and now I had one I could actually taste! We got checked again by fish cops the second day. Tuesday woke up and the winds they had been predicting were strong. So we just drove home. Thanks again!

Yup it sure if funny though how I've never got sick before... four foot waves on calling or cold lake, cruises on the ocean, fishing off the coast in BC, and charter fishing in Mexico with 10 foot seas and never felt a thing. I guess ten foot seas in a kayak is a little different. Hmmm, I'm not familiar with something called botamine, but its likely called Bonine (Bonamine canadian brand name) which works for motion sickness. The meds I am familiar with being used are scopolamine and dramamine (which is Gravol in Canada). Dramamine causes drowsiness though and Bonine does not. The scopolamine patches are nice since you can get ones that last 72 hours and you don't have to worry about it after you stick it on.

I guess I'll just have to expect it now on the kayak out on the ocean.

Brandon (with a twist... now MD, haha, if you were wondering about the med info)
